     No livro original haviam outras partes sobre o programa de suplementos alimentares e de exercícios físicos. Havia até um apêndice com receitas culinárias. Não foi possível digitalizar todo este material. O livro finaliza com a conclusão, a lista de organizações que podem apoiar o programa antienvelhecimento e a bibliografia. A conclusão que se segue, fornece um panorama da medicina ocidental e oriental e da necessidade de buscarmos todos, alternativas mais naturais para saúde. Espero que todo este trabalho nos conduza para uma vida saudável e longa.

19.1  Conclusão

     Juventude não tem idade.

     Concluir um trabalho sempre foi uma das minhas maiores dificuldades. Este livro não foi exceção. Depois de concluir as versões iniciais dos capítulos, eu tinha a intenção de compor uma conclusão eloquente que consolidasse e integrasse os inúmeros conceitos apresentados ao longo do livro. Queria que minhas palavras finais oferecessem conselhos práticos sobre como iniciar o Programa Antienvelhecimento para Renovação e como monitorar a sua eficácia. E, por fim, queria dotar você, leitor, de autoconfiança suficiente para saber que você pode ter sucesso.

     Depois de estudar, praticar e ensinar medicina tradicional chinesa durante mais de um quarto de século, passei a apreciar a filosofia taoísta sobre a qual ela se alicerça. Ao longo dos anos, quando tinha que enfrentar algum problema, precisava de conselhos ou inspiração, ou quando não sabia como lidar com uma situação difícil, eu consultava o I Ching (o livro das mutações), o oráculo taoísta chinês.

     Depois de ter redigido - e descartado - algumas versões desta conclusão, eu sabia que chegara a hora de pedir conselhos, por isso tirei da estante o meu exemplar do I Ching, já bastante manuseado. Joguei minhas antigas moedas chinesas do I Ching, pedindo ao oráculo que me oferecesse uma base conceitual na qual eu pudesse basear este capítulo final.

     Perguntei: "Que palavras finais de sabedoria eu poderei oferecer aos meus leitores?"

19.1.1  A resposta veio em alto e bom som.

     O primeiro hexagrama (representando o julgamento do que está acontecendo hoje) era o número sete: Shih, ou o Exército. Shih simboliza a força interna armazenada pelo indivíduo para proteção e que pode ser usada contra o inimigo. O I Ching estava me estimulando a enfatizar novamente a importância da criação de um forte sistema de cura - um exército interno - com o qual seria possível concretizar as metas da Renovação - proteção contra danos, reparo e regeneração. Esse exército utiliza armas como nutrientes essenciais e antioxidantes que podem ajudá-lo a vencer uma guerra perpétua contra os radicais químicos livres.

     Não consigo imaginar melhor imagem do que um exército para representar as metas do Programa Antienvelhecimento. O exército tem força, disciplina, coesão e pensa muito antes de lutar. Preserva a paz por meio da força. Para se tornar uma força eficaz no combate às doenças, seu exército interno precisa ser organizado (ou seja, você precisa de um Programa Antienvelhecimento) e disciplinado (é preciso realmente seguir o programa).

     Quando o hexagrama tem linhas que mudam, como o meu tinha, o I Ching faz um segundo julgamento - sua previsão para o futuro. Para minha surpresa e deleite, o hexagrama mudou para o número 14: Ta Yu, Grande Riqueza. O texto de Ta Yu dizia: "A época é propícia - uma época de força interior, clareza e cultura exterior. O poder se expressa de modo gracioso e controlado. Isso gera grande sucesso e riqueza." Isso significa que, se você criar um exército interno forte seguindo a Dieta Antienvelhecimento, o Programa de Suplementos Antienvelhecimento e o Programa de Exercícios Antienvelhecimento, você pode esperar alcançar a Grande Riqueza - uma vida mais longa, mais rica e mais saudável.

19.1.2  Mudanças no Paradigma Médico

     O Programa Antienvelhecimento para Renovação defende a mudança pessoal. Em maior escala, estimula mudanças na maneira de ver a saúde e a cura - e uma nova maneira de praticar a medicina.

     Logo chegará o dia em que os médicos considerarão um ataque cardíaco ou um derrame não uma ação terapêutica, mas uma falha da metodologia médica tradicional. A medicina tradicional, onde ocorrem intervenções tardias, não é mais aceitável. É preciso encontrar uma maneira de estimular os médicos a ensinarem métodos de prevenção. Precisamos adotar o diagnóstico precoce. E precisamos substituir medicamentos e cirurgias por uma abordagem mais suave na qual as terapias naturais restaurem o equilíbrio e a harmonia, permitindo que o próprio corpo se cure.

     Os médicos do futuro darão ênfase à detecção precoce, utilizando exames diagnósticos que realizam o levantamento do terreno biológico e identificam desequilíbrios hormonais, funcionais e metabólicos. Esses desequilíbrios serão corrigidos, talvez até antes do aparecimento dos sintomas, com a ajuda de terapias naturais e mudanças no estilo de vida que apóiem os sistemas de cura do corpo.

     Os médicos que se especializam em medicina alternativa, nutricional e antienvelhecimento estão além do seu tempo. Já utilizam esses princípios na prática.

19.1.3  Será que os Pacientes Podem Salvar os Médicos?

     Nós, adeptos da medicina alternativa, que nos esquivamos dos ataques da medicina tradicional há décadas, podemos agradecer à sorte por termos conquistado recentemente o apoio popular. Um número cada vez maior de norte-americanos vem abraçando a sabedoria dos modelos médicos naturais e holísticos. E não têm medo de dizer aos médicos tradicionais que um médico naturalista, um médico nutrólogo, um especialista em ervas medicinais, um homeopata, um osteopata ou um acupunturista os ajudaram quando a medicina ortodoxa falhou.

     Graças a você, paciente. Se fosse pelo establishment médico, pelo governo ou pela indústria farmacêutica (o que costumo chamar de complexo médico industrial), o novo paradigma médico já teria sido torpedeado há muito tempo. As pessoas, em média, vêm preferindo cada vez mais a medicina alternativa e a saúde ideal. "Bem-estar" tornou-se uma palavra corriqueira. Depois de sofrer duas décadas de rejeição pelo establishment médico, a medicina alternativa está prestes a entrar para o rol das práticas aceitas - se é que já não entrou.

     Alguns sinais estimulantes: o New England Journal of Medicine relatou que o número de pessoas que procuram médicos alternativos é maior do que o número daquelas que procura médicos tradicionais. Trajetórias recentes em gráficos de vendas de alimentos naturais e do setor de suplementos assemelham-se ao lançamento de uma nave espacial: o faturamento bruto do setor chegou a 9 bilhões de dólares em 1999. E o National Institutes of Health criou o Office of Alternative Medicine, dedicando 40 milhões de dólares a pesquisas sobre cura natural.

     Em 1994, o Congresso norte-americano aprovou o Dietary Health and Supplement Education Act - apesar do intenso lobby contra a lei por parte da Food and Drug Administration e da indústria farmacêutica. A nova lei redefine os suplementos, considerando-os alimentos (o que os colocava sob o controle da FDA). Em outras palavras, estimula as pessoas a assumirem o controle da sua própria saúde.

     O enorme apoio público ao que se conhece publicamente como Health Freedom Act é uma medida da oportunidade do novo paradigma médico. E isso antes de o guru da medicina alternativa, Andrew Nei, M.D., ser capa da revista Time.

     Nós, os médicos que seguem o novo paradigma, somos profundamente gratos aos milhões de pacientes que, corajosamente, exigiram dos políticos que eles ajudaram a eleger que lutassem por essas mudanças. Mas o fato de, em geral, os pacientes descobrirem a importância da medicina natural antes de seus médicos não é um bom sinal. Hoje, cabe aos pacientes o ônus de arrastar os médicos, aos gritos, para a medicina do século XXI.

     Felizmente (acredito), a American Medical Association adotou a atitude do tipo "Se não puder lutar contra eles (e não pense que nós não tentamos, mas eles se recusam a ir embora), junte-se a eles". Embora saibam que a medicina alternativa é uma idéia cuja a hora chegou, os médicos tradicionais têm diante de si o desafio da mudança de paradigma necessária para compreender a sua essência.

     Enfatizei a importância de estimular os sistemas de cura e evitar alimentos, substâncias químicas e outras práticas que neles interferem. É essencial apoiar uma medicina do futuro na qual a importância da Renovação seja apreciada e os médicos receitem terapias naturais e preventivas que sustentem os sistemas de cura do corpo.

19.1.4  Rumo ao Lar

     Logo após concluir os originais deste livro, vi-me em um avião a caminho de casa, após uma conferência. Sem a pressão dos prazos de entrega em meus calcanhares pela primeira vez em muitos meses, relaxei na poltrona do avião e finalmente parei para refletir.

     O dia estava excepcionalmente claro e, à medida que o avião se aproximava da região da baía de San Francisco, avistei o monte Rainier, o que me recordou o ano que eu acabara de encerrar - horas e horas de trabalho solitário, longe da minha esposa e das minhas filhas, concluindo esse projeto imenso. Sentia-me como se tivesse acabado de escalar uma montanha.

     Pouco mais adiante, seguindo o contorno da costa do Pacífico rumo ao sul, as maravilhosas florestas de sequóia surgiram em minha janela. Lembrei-me da fragilidade do nosso ecossistema - tanto interno quanto externo - e da importância de proteger a nossa saúde e a saúde do nosso planeta.

     Depois, à medida que o avião seguia rumo ao sul, sobrevoando as fazendas férteis da minha terra natal, o condado de Sonoma, pensei em minha maravilhosa esposa e nas esperanças e sonhos que tínhamos para a saúde e o bem-estar de nossas duas filhas; foi então que percebi como eu sentira a sua falta durante o último ano.

     Ao sobrevoarmos Berkeley, onde tenho consultório há mais de 30 anos, pensei nos muitos pacientes que se beneficiaram do Programa Antienvelhecimento para Renovação. Pensei no meu bom amigo Steve, que reverteu o caminho certo para o ataque cardíaco ao adotar o programa. Pensei em Linda, que iniciou o programa após uma cirurgia para retirada de um tumor no seio. Já se passaram dez anos da cirurgia, não houve reincidência do tumor, e hoje ela está mais saudável do que antes da doença, sendo considerada "curada". Pensei em Madge, cuja artrite era tão debilitante que ela entrou mancando em meu consultório. Hoje, ela passeia com o cão e joga golfe diariamente. Pensei em Jean, debilitada pela síndrome da fadiga crônica, e que hoje já voltou ao trabalho.

     E pensei em minha mãe, Elizabeth, uma das primeiras seguidoras do Programa Antienvelhecimento para Renovação. Aos 85 anos, ela é mais saudável do que muitos indivíduos de 50 anos. Ela é o exemplo mais pungente do potencial do Programa Antienvelhecimento para Renovação. Em excelente forma, ela segue em frente. Não tem doenças e não precisa fazer uso de medicamento algum. Escritora e professora de inglês aposentada, sua acuidade mental não diminuiu - graças à ajuda de nutrientes para o cérebro. No ano passado, publicou um artigo em um periódico médico e agora está escrevendo uma nova peça. Corre, passeia com o cachorro e faz aeróbica diariamente. Tornou-se vegetariana há 15 anos e toma a maioria dos nutrientes que recomendo neste livro (embora não todos).

     Ao manobrarmos rumo ao oeste, e depois de volta ao norte, fixei o olhar no oceano Pacífico. Fascinado com o reflexo do sol na água, pensei na minha volta à "vida normal" - não mais o escritor sequestrado; de volta à prática da medicina em tempo integral e à vida familiar, brincando com minhas filhas e escalando montanhas com minha esposa.

     Ao nos aproximarmos do aeroporto, meus pensamentos se voltaram para este livro e todas as pessoas que o leriam, e fiquei imaginando se faria diferença para a vida delas. Imaginei se as minhas tentativas de transformar a assustadora bioquímica em informações fáceis de entender teriam sucesso. Perguntei-me se não seria presunção de minha parte dizer às pessoas que, se seguissem meus conselhos, elas poderiam viver mais. Foi então que me lembrei de centenas de clientes, como Steve, Linda e Madge, que haviam se beneficiado.

     Quando avião tocou o solo, percebi que, durante toda a minha vida como médico, eu fora abençoado com uma carreira na qual eu tive oportunidade de fazer diferença na vida das pessoas. Até escrever este livro, porém, tratava-se de uma pessoa de cada vez. Agora, fui agraciado com a oportunidade de fazer diferença na vida de muita gente.

     Minha esperança - meu sonho - é que este livro ajude a transformar a sua vida, que lhe forneça asas com as quais você possa voar em uma vida não só mais longa como também mais saudável e mais feliz. Se as idéias aqui contidas o ajudarem - e aos seus entes queridos - a alcançar a audaciosa promessa do I Ching, a Grande Riqueza, meu esforço para escrever este livro terá sido recompensado.

19.2.5.1  Osteoporose

     A absorciometria por fóton dual consiste em uma medida sensível da densidade óssea. O N-Telepeptídeo (NTx) é uma proteína secretada pela perda óssea que pode ser detectada em uma amostra da urina. Níveis elevados de NTx indicam ritmo aumentado de perda óssea.
